Qur’an the Book of Signs

The word Qur’an has been derived from qura means recitation.

Qur’an has been revealed upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the last Messenger of God through angel Gabriel (PBUH). The Quran was revealed on Muhammad (PBUH) slowly and gradually over a period of 23 years. This book is the last revealed book after revelation of earlier books like Torah to Moses (PBUH), the Psalms to David (PBUH) and Gospel (injil) to Isa (Jesus PBUH). Qur’an is a word of God and it is unaltered since it was revealed 1430 years ago. Qur’an is the final Divine Book of guidance for humanity till the Day of Judgment, so God did not allow it to be contaminated, because God (Allah SWT) has given the promise that, “Verily it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption)”15:9

Qur’an is straight forward, consistent, and without any conflict, pure and unaltered in its original Arabic language. The Message of the Qur’an is universal and directed towards entire mankind. Qur’an is not arranged in a linear way, nor is it arranged subject wise. Subjects are scattered and repeated over various verses, in its arrangement.  One chapter covers many subjects and one subject is scattered over many chapters, this style of Qur’an serves the purpose of multiple reminders for important topics.

Most of the initial verses revealed in Mecca deal with establishing the firm belief in One God in the hearts of people. The later verses revealed in Madinah cover a vast array of subjects.

Though it is not difficult to understand the Qur’an, it requires a lot of effort. Many verses are simple and self-explanatory where as many verses require study of the background and context in which they were revealed, before the meaning and purpose of the verse becomes clear. Hence, studying the Qur’an is a special art and those who do so are held in high esteem.

Qur’an is the primary source of faith and guidance for all mankind. It is a great gift and blessing to mankind from its Creator. Qur’an deals with all the subjects that concern human beings, faith, wisdom, worship, life and death, family, community, state, law etc. Differentiating between right and wrong is one of the many wonders of Qur’an, it makes distinction among the right and wrong with very sound logical arguments and proofs.  Allah (SWT) describes the Qur’an in its own words, “This is the Book (judge, (Furqaan)) which differentiate between right and wrong.” 25:1.

If one really opens his/her heart and ponders over the sayings of the Qur’an, it will surely illuminate the heart. It will open up the way to the treasure of wisdom and the spring of guidance. If someone studies the Qur’an properly and understands it; he or she will be clear of all doubts and tons of questions about our existence, life, earth, universe, creations, Creator etc. It also provides the tools to get connected with God.

The wordings of Qur’an have rhymes and rhythm in it; it has great captivating power when read in its original language, Arabic. This book is the source of inspiration, strength, peace of mind, and contentment of heart. It contains solutions to all the problems mankind is facing today and may face in future. It gives life a purpose and sense of fulfillment for its believers. Thinking and actions of Muslims around the world are based on the guidance contained in this Book.

Qur’an describes various signs within this universe and within ourselves through which God has manifested Himself, therefore it is also known as Book of Signs. This book explains at length signs of the Creator and about His creations. Paying attention to these signs leads us to comprehend and acknowledge the existence and Oneness of God.
